I prepared the MAC disk version of the p 139 web site and all the original file names were preserved (as expected). It is useful to know that in spite of the Macs good faith attempt to read DOS diskettes (achieving sorely needed cross compatibility) it does so imperfectly when working with Windows 95/98. Windows finally acquired the long file name feature when Windows 95 was released. This does not mean, however, that Macs will automatically transfer Windows long file names to MAC long filename (as we had seen!). I will prepare an advise blurb to PC users who also work with Macs advising them to restrict file name conventions to the 8.3 (eight character file name length, 3 letter extension) DOS limit (that is don't use long file names!) so that MAC systems can easily read and convert them. This will (hopefully) eliminate any extra work on correcting truncated file names. So here it is...
Attention PC users who also work with Macs When you build your web sites in Windows 95/98, restrict your file naming to eight text and 3 letter extension (e.g., ournames.htm). When you use the dos based disk in the MAC (OS 8.0 or higher), the file lengths and extensions will be preserved.
