Hello everyone! So it's 1999 and everyone's attention sooner or later will be directed towards the y2k compliance issue (problem or issue, a matter of semantics?). Before anyone runs out and buys Y2k software (which will be increasing exponentially over the next several months!) Here is a simple five step compliance test that I cut and paste from www.winmag.com library on the Y2k problem (issue?).
Of course MAC based machines do not have a problem, although there may be specific MAC software that will encounter difficulties at the millenium rollover.
If there are any questions regarding this issue feel free to email (use nmj@homeroom.net or homeroom@worldnet.att.net or n.juszczak@worldnet.att.net . Naturally the first two email addresses are preferrable.
Five-Step Compliance Test
Fortunately, you can run a thorough manual test in as little as 5 minutes (depending in part on your system's boot-up speed). However, if you'd prefer automated tests (useful if you need to test a large number of PCs), see the sidebar "Rx for Y2K."
Although we're testing Windows-based systems here, you need to run all the tests from a DOS command line. That's because you need to see the results in as raw and unfiltered a fashion as possible. You don't want Windows' higher functions correcting or altering these results. Also, you might have time-dependent Windows applications that run at set intervals, or you may even have time-limited software licenses that will expire if you change the system date to the future. To avoid all these problems, perform the following tests in DOS, exactly as indicated. If your system fails at any point, don't go any further. Instead, skip right to the fixes and pick up where you left off once you've solved the problem.
Step One: Test the Basic OS Boot your system to a DOS command prompt (this is, essentially, Windows without the GUI). You usually can boot to DOS either by using a boot disk or by hitting the F8 key just after you hear the start-up system beep. On some systems, Windows loads almost immediately after the system beep, so you might have to keep hitting F8 repeatedly in order to beat it. When the Start-Up menu appears, choose "Command prompt only."
Note: If your PC loads time-triggered batch files or other software in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, you might also want to rename these files temporarily and boot clean so your time tests won't inadvertently trigger an event or application. Likewise, if your system is on a network, you may want to disconnect the network cable temporarily to prevent your PC from obtaining time/date information from the network server.
At the C:\ prompt, type DATE 12-31-1999 and press Enter. Then type TIME 23:59:30 and press Enter. In both cases, the OS will automatically adjust the system clock and, through the BIOS, the RTC. Your PC now thinks it's seconds before the end of the millennium.
Wait about a minute, then type DATE and hit enter. If the date displayed is January 1, 2000, then your operating system itself is Y2K compliant. But that doesn't mean you're out of the woods.
Step Two: Test the OS/BIOS Combination Without changing anything from Step One, reboot to DOS. At the C:\ prompt, type DATE and press Enter. If the date displayed is still shown as January 1, 2000, then your OS/BIOS combination is Y2K compliant. But if the date is different from what you saw in the previous step, you have a Y2K problem in the BIOS or RTC.
(Note: You might see a date from 1980 rather than 1900. While mainframes and other PC OSes interpret a "00" date as 1900, both DOS and Windows ignore dates from the pre-DOS era and will interpret a "00" date as 1980.)
Step Three: Test the BIOS Itself Reboot and enter your BIOS setup program. This is usually done by pressing a special key combination during boot-up. (Read the text on the screen at start-up: You'll usually see a line such as "F2 to enter setup ..." If there's no display or if you can't read it, check your owner's manual.)
Set the BIOS date to December 31, 1999 and the time 23:59:50. Wait until the BIOS's time display rolls past midnight and see if the date and time change properly. If they do, your BIOS itself is Y2K compliant.
Step Four: Test the BIOS/RTC Combination Still inside your BIOS setup program, reset the date to December 31, 1999 and the time to 23:58:00. (If your system is very slow to boot, set the time a few minutes earlier.)
Reboot to DOS and turn off your PC. Wait long enough for the date to roll over.
Turn the power back on and reboot, immediately re-entering the BIOS setup program. If the January 1, 2000 date and time are shown properly, your BIOS and RTC work together properly to handle Y2K.
Step Five: Full Circle Without changing anything from Step Four, exit the BIOS setup program and reboot to DOS. At a DOS prompt, type DATE and press Enter. If the January 1, 2000 date is shown correctly, you're home free: Your system clocks and BIOS have no problem with the Millennium Bug.
Now, before you enter Windows, make sure you change your date and time to the correct values.
If your system clocks and BIOS checked out okay, skip ahead to "Y2K and Your Shrink-Wrap Software." But if you had a problem, the next section is for you.
------------
Hope this helps...
