Macs Ahead of Their Time? NZ InfoTech Weekly March 23 1998 Macintosh users don't have to worry about the Year 2000 millennium bug. (nmj!!!) Its designers anticipated the date changeover before introducing the first Mac system in 1984. "Any Mac operating system application that makes correct use of the Mac OS Toolbox for clock functions will not have a problem transitioning to the Year 2000," says Apple solutions manager John Holley. The original date and time utilities introduced with the first Macintosh 128K computer in 1984, used a long word to store seconds starting at January 1, 1904. This approach allows the correct representation of dates up to 6:28:15am on February 6, 2040. The date and time facilities use a 64-bit signed value covering the dates from 30081BC to 29940AD. "Macintosh customers have been asking what they should do to prepare for Year 2000 and we're telling them the operating system Is already fully compliant," Mr Holley says. "It’s a big relief for business customers because they don't have to invest a lot of time and money fixing the problem." Intel-standard PC users aren't so lucky - a team at Nasa's Lewis Research Centre in Clevelancl tested Windows systems and found that 47 per cent of its PCs will have to be tweaked to cope with the millennium change. In the United State's, a report delivered to Congress by the federal Office of Management and Budget found that only 19 per cent of mission-critical systems are Y2Kcompliant. It will cost up to US$3.8 billion (NZ$6.5 billion) to fix the systems. But Mr Holley says even the oldest Macintoshes will handle the date problem. "Some older software might be a problem, but that is the case with any operating environment. The Mac operating system has full support for Y2K - it will just work strains user input to dates between when the time comes . The present version of Apple’s date and time control panel constrains user input to dates between January 1 1920 and December 31 2019. Apple will fix this problem in a forthcoming Mac OS upgrade. Concern about systems coping with leap year in 2000 is not a problem for Macintosh users, Mr Holley says. "Yes there will be a February 29, 2000. The rule is that years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. From this rule, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 is. "Apple's Mac OS and Rhapsody products will correctly indicate February 29, 2000."
